Ajay (Ajay Devgan) is on a cruise with four of his friends. Nikhil (Sumeet Raghavan) and Reena (Divya Dutta) are an unhappily married couple whilst Vicky (Karan Khanna) and Natasha (Isha Sharvani) are a happily unmarried couple. Over there, he meets Pia (Kajol) and falls in love with her. After a disastrous first meeting, Ajay tries everything to woo her but Pia doesn't fall for it. Eventually, by sheer perseverance, he dances his way into her heart and the two get married. Everything is expected to be happy until Pia is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The domestic situation of the happy couple becomes difficult following a major incident caused due to Pia's disease where the couple's son is almost killed. Ajay reluctantly decides to place Pia in special care. Though Pia unaware of her surroundings, doesn't realize it in the beginning, there happen to be times when she seems to be normal and remembers everything. She longs for Ajay and becomes depressed when he doesn't respond. However, Ajay decides to take Pia back home in spite of her illness. But unfortunately, Pia seems to fail to recognize Ajay. Whether Pia has really forgotten Ajay or she is pretending to do so forms the climax of the movie. The plot of this movie is inspired by the 2004 Hollywood movie The Notebook.

[edit] Reception
The film opened to a poor response of 40-45% at several places but due to good reports, the collections got better as the day progressed in the multiplexes of big cities. The late shows were reported to have collections of over 60%.[4][5]

Critics' reviews towards the movie were mostly positive, with Taran Adarsh giving the film 4 out of 5 stars and describing it as "a well-made, absorbing love story that's high on the emotional quotient".[6] The performances by the lead pair were also praised. Taran Adarsh further commented, "U, Me aur Hum is like a medal that glimmers on Ajay Devgan's body of work. He's exceptional! Kajol, well, what can you say of an actress who has proved herself time and again? That she's undoubtedly the best has been proved yet again."[6] Raja Sen noted, "Kajol raises the bar strikingly high... And Devgan...[delivers] an intense acting job."[7]

Devgan's direction also won favorable reviews. Raja Sen further noted, "Ajay Devgan's first is an impressive directorial debut that starts abruptly but gathers force as it goes along, ending up finding its own voice [as] a powerful romantic drama."[7] Despite winning good reviews for its performances and direction, the film was also criticized for its screenplay and length. Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN wrote, "Devgan's directorial debut...is let down by a sloppy, slapdash screenplay" whilst Joginder Tuteja from indiaglitz.com wrote, "On the whole, U, Me aur Hum gets a little dragging primarily in the first half and is a little loose on its screenplay."[8][9]

Pre-production of the film began in late 2006 with Akshay Kumar being signed first, and Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor next.[1] In early 2007, Anil Kapoor was signed on to play a negative role in the film.[2] This film marks the return of Kumar and Kareena Kapoor to the Yash Raj banner after the former's Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), and the latter's Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). Anil Kapoor also makes a comeback to the Yash Raj banner after 16 years. His last film with the banner was Lamhe (1992).

Apart from the major star cast, Khan's son, Ibrahim, will be seen making his debut with the film, and is reported to play his son.[3][4] All the actors will be seen sporting new looks designed by designer Aki Narula, with Kareena Kapoor in a very glamorous role and reportedly donning a bikini.[5][6]

In June 2007, the cast began filming in Kerala, and later continued shooting in Laddakh and Rajasthan.[7][8][9] Pictures of Khan and Kareena Kapoor were taken in September 2007 while shooting for the film in the Fort area of Mumbai.[10] Some portions of the film were later shot in the city of Haridwar on the banks of the river Ganges and Greece.[11][12]

The first promo was shown on November 30, 2007 with the release of Anil Mehta's Aaja Nachle.[13] In a recent poll conducted by IndiaFM, Tashan ranked first on the list of "Most Awaited Movies of 2008".[14] To promote the film, Yash Raj Films built communities on social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut and YouTube.[15]

[edit] Synopsis
The film tells the story about call center executive Jimmy Cliff (Saif Ali Khan), gangster Bachchan Pande (Akshay Kumar) and Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), a girl who can't be trusted. The three of them are on a dangerous journey across India, which will alter the course of their lives in more ways than one. In addition to that, there is the evil eye of Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor), a maverick gangster who enjoys killing people as much as he enjoys speaking English.[16]
